This information should be of security interest because it can help render any previously stored information on a hard disk unreadable. There are different ‘flavors’ of FDISK and you should use the proper one for the operating system you have in your computer.
• DOS 6.22 FDISK cannot handle drives larger than 8.4 GB.
• Win95 FDISK supports drives larger than 8.4 GB if the BIOS can support INT14 Extensions; to use it correctly, boot to the ‘command prompt Only’ on Startup, or choose ‘Restart in MS-DOS Mode’ on shutdown or boot from a Win95 startup floppy disk.
• Win95 OSR2 also supports FAT32 (see Section 4.2.6) but you must answer ‘yes’ to the question ‘Do you want to enable large disk support?’ (Answering ‘no’ still enables access to large drives but not to FAT32). Do not use the /X option.
• Win98, WinNT, Win2000. Use the FDISK that comes with those systems.
Use the /MBR option if a virus has infected your mater boot record (MBR).
